In an exclusive revelation from The National Pulse, Dr. Anthony Fauci appeared at an event with the researcher who is the adviser on the controversial facilities’ “Gain of Function” Research. Fauci has previously denied any affiliation between his government agency and the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

In 2017, Professor Linda Saif was invited to present at the Wuhan Institute of Virology at the “2nd China–U.S. Workshop on the Challenges of Emerging Infections, Laboratory Safety and Global Health Security,” as a special guest. According to the Wuhan lab’s account of the event, the Wuhan lab sponsored five academic sessions at the conference, the first of which was devoted to “gain of function research, gene editing, targeting and delivery and other novel biotechnology.”

Interestingly,  in May 2021, Saif and the Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), Dr. Anthony Fauci, presented at a recent event of the American Association of Immunologists’ Virtual Immunology. Despite Fauci’s efforts to disassociate NIAID funds from the Wuhan Institute of Virology, his relationship with Saif contributes to a growing body of evidence suggesting otherwise.

Saif and Fauci’s panel, namely COVID-19 and the Science of Pandemics—Lessons Learned, also follows a lengthy history of NIAID sponsoring Saif’s research from 1985. She has received 56 grants from the National Institutes of Health, 43 of which came from Fauci’s NIAID.

The conference details were revealed following a tense argument between Fauci and Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.) in which the NIAID Director rejected ever providing money to the Wuhan Institute of Virology to conduct gain of function research.

However, as stated in NIH grant records, money donated to the EcoHealth Alliance in New York was used for research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

Beyond establishing a working partnership between the NIH and the Wuhan Institute of Virology, now-deleted posts from the site mention investigations with the Wuhan-based lab that exhibit the characteristics of gain-of-function research. But in the hearing, Fauci told Sen. Paul that “the NIH has not ever and does not now fund gain-of-function research in the Wuhan Institute of Virology.”
