Since the particles in the contaminated batches in Japan reacted to magnets, metallic parts are suspected. The EMA is also now reviewing shipments.

Contaminated batch of Covid 19 Vaccine

Metal particles may have been found in the contaminated batch of Covid-19 vaccine from Moderna in Japan, according to a media report. The particles reacted to magnets, which is why they are suspected to be metallic, Japanese broadcaster NHK reported Friday, citing health ministry sources.

A Health Ministry representative, on the other hand, said what the contamination was has not yet been confirmed.

Japan had withdrawn a total of just over 1.6 million doses of Moderna vaccine from circulation on Monday over reports of contamination in some ampoules, saying it was purely a precautionary measure.

The offending batch includes 565,400 vaccine doses, and two adjacent batches have also been withdrawn from the market as a precaution. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) is investigating whether deliveries to the EU could also be affected.
