The Castellón-based company Graphenglass manufactures equipment for multi-lung ventilation for Covid 19 patients. Non-Profit” has started with 80 pieces per day to address the possible shortage of ventilators in hospitals and fight the pandemic.

Development of Advanced Materials

The innovation and development team at Castellón-based Graphenglass, a company dedicated to graphene technology for the development of advanced materials, has altruistically provided health authorities with parts to address the potential shortage of pulmonary ventilators in hospitals.

According to Javier Heredia, technical director and founding partner, since the beginning of the spread of the coronavirus in Spain, they have focused on studying solutions to address the shortage of medical equipment and contain the pandemic.

“We have studied the advances made in other countries to address the shortage of ventilators, which is now one of the most important hospital supplies,” says Javier Heredia.

Progress in other Countries

Among the possible measures that the company considered were the manufacture of the ventilators, which it found “complicated” because of the machinery required, or the development of a circuit distributor in the shape of a “Y”.

“We have seen some studies that were done in 2006 in the U.S. and some tests that were done in France, which were reviewed and confirmed by the Madrid School of Engineering. This project allows the use of one part to ventilate multiple lungs in patients with Covid-19,” says the technical director.

Heredia emphasizes that this solution will help multiply the support capacity of currently available ventilators.

The largest 3D Printer

For production, they have the largest 3D printer on the international market, which allows them to reproduce parts with high precision and in large quantities. In addition, the immediate design through printing enables the traceability of the entire process, production control and disinfection, ensuring a controlled and stable supply.

Awaiting validation and adaptation by health authorities, the company produces 80 units per day in anticipation of their possible needs, although production could be increased to 320 units per day. “We have informed the Generalitat and local authorities, such as the City Council, of this progress and are still waiting for a response. We have doctors in the company who have proven their usefulness, but we must comply with all procedures,” says Javier Heredia.

In addition, they are in contact and coordinate with the national community of #coronavirus manufacturers to transfer production to anyone with 3D printers compatible with the solution, preferably using engineered DLP resins with high mechanical performance, capable of withstanding working pressures much higher than those required for this application. The device has been tested for continuous operation at 6 bar pressure.

In the development of the device, the R&D team has always been supported by the CEO and President of CD Castellón, Vicente Montesinos, who promoted the initiative and led all activities to achieve the goal of offering the device free of charge, despite efforts that, according to the company, include technical and human resources for development, as well as material resources, raw materials and means of production.
